CBCM John L. Smith II

Seabee Master Chief Smith was born in March AFB in Riverside, Calif., and grew up in Golden, Colo. After he graduated from Golden High School in June 1986, he completed a two-year Masonry Trade school and worked as a Journeyman Brick Mason until Joining the Navy in April 1997. 

He graduated Recruit Training at Recruit Training Center, Great Lakes, in June1997. In September 1997, he completed Builder "A" School at the Naval Construction Training Center, in Gulfport, Miss., and was assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 133.

During his tour with NMCB 133, he deployed to Bosnia in support of Operation Joint Guard and made subsequent deployments to San Diego California, Rota Spain, Sigonella, and Moldova. While with NMCB 133, he was promoted to third and second class Petty Officer.

In December 2001, Master Chief Smith reported to NCTC, Gulfport to instruct Builder “A” School, Planning & Estimating and Builder C-1 Advanced Schools. He served as lead instructor for Builder Advanced School and finished his tour as a Navy Military Training Instructor. While with NCTC, he was advanced to Petty Officer First Class and selected to Chief Petty Officer.

He reported to NMCB 74 in April 2005 and deployed to Okinawa, Africa, Bahrain, and Afghanistan. While with NMCB 74, he was selected to Senior Chief Petty Officer. In June 2007, he transferred to NMCB 11 and was assigned as the Battalion Training Chief. In January 2009, he reported to the Navy Personnel Command in Millington, Tenn., where he was selected as the Seabee Readiness and Placement Officer. In July 2012, he reported to Naval Construction Group Two where he served as the Military and Tactics Division, Leading Chief Petty Officer. In May of 2014 he transferred to NMCB 1 where he was assigned as the Battalion Operations Chief. While assigned to NMCB 1, he was selected to Master Chief Petty Officer and deployed to Spain and Djibouti, Africa.

In May of 2017, he transferred from NMCB 1 and found himself back in Millington, Tenn., this time as the Seabee Enlisted Community Manager at BUPERS 32. While assigned to BUPERS, he implemented several Sailor 2025 initiatives and also served as the Navy’s NWAE and MAP advancement quota planner, leaving a positive impact on the Navy and the Seabee community. 

In February 2021, he reported to NAVFAC EURAFCENT where he currently serves as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader.

Master Chief Smith is a graduate of the Naval Senior Enlisted Academy, Class 134 (Khaki) and CMC/COB school class 21020. He is a designated Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist, Expeditionary Warfare Specialist, Aviation Warfare Specialist and Master Training Specialist.  His awards include Navy Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (Four awards), Navy Achievement Medal (Six awards), Army Achievement Medal, and many other unit and personal awards.
